Review of Wag the Dog

Wag the Dog is really a interesting intellectual comic movie. The director has tried to screen the Hollywood and presidential politics in a very intellectual way. The film showed the relationship between the mass media and USA politics. The film has started with a upcoming election which is going to held after two weeks. In the meantime a sitting president is hit by a sex scandal. The media started to give more time and space about this issue and this issue became the main agenda of public knowledge. The most interesting part starts from there. The sitting president's two aids come to help him. They thought if they can switch the public minds to another serious issue. So they decide to show a war against Albania. Why Albania? Because most of the Americans don't know anything about Albania. For this reason they go to a famous Hollywood director and tell him about this. Then the director create a very sensitive news- a girl with a cat is rushing, a theme song and the slogan. Media create it as their evening news and it has started to become burning issue. Suddenly, they showed the war is over. However it is true or not the television is showing it, so it must be true, must be real. They create a hero in front of the public. In an incident the hero died then they showed they buried him with great respect and guard of honor. At last the president win the election. The Hollywood director want credit for it but they ignore to give him the credit. Then they killed the director. But in TV news they declared the director has died in a massive heart attack. In this movie director Barry Levinson has done a great job. It is true that sometimes media create some vague thing and people believe them. What media is showing that's always not true. They create some programs for their interest. Like the reality shows. Reality shows are constructed by them. the always tell us this show is real but always it is not real. This film is created in 1997 before the Iraq war. If we look at what is America doing in Iraq? we see that in the very first time USA gave a cause that they were attacking Iraq because they have a collection of atomic weapon. The People in USA, they didn't know very much about Iraq. The media showed Iraq to them in a very negative way. Even the BBC didn't show the real thing about the Iraq. In this war USA destroyed very important historical evidence in Iraq. Iraq was culturally and also historically very rich. Not only that the media didn't show the real picture of sexual harassment which had done by the USA and UK soldier. The whole world didn't support this war but they did it for their personal interest. Their personal interest is their politics. The international media is controlled by the west and everything in their is not always friendly for us. So, it is not necessary to always believe what is showing media. Because somethings they construct for the public to run their business.

I liked your review a lot. You relate the film to later events in Iraq well. However, I think you could comment on the deep cynicism of the film and the view it takes of the audience, which it sees as easily duped by the media. You do comment on the killing of Stanley Motss, but it's also worthwhile reflecting on him. At one level he is the mast manipulator but at another level he is an innocent. He really doesn't grasp the length to which Conrad and the others will go to in order to hold on to political power. The real message for me. is that you can't trust the institutions of the state.
